Mills Novelty Company

Mills Novelty Company was founded in 1891 in Chicago. The man who stood behind this was Mortimer Birdsul Mills. The company had mainly dealt with its patented coin-operated cigar vending machines. Mills Company was rather successful in business, constantly producing new more interesting, innovative, upgraded slot machines, like the Owl, produced in 1897.

The Owl

The Owl can be characterized as coin-operated roulette style slot machine. What is more it was one of the first mechanical vertical arcade games ever. On the wooden cabinet there was an Owl image, which later had become company’s main logo. It is not surprising that such kind of slot machine became extremely popular across the United States and brought good profit to its creator Mr. Mills and his company. Only thanks to this slot company could employ about 500 new workers.

Mills Company Success

All the Mills Novelty Company's slot machines together with good old vending machines were of the highest demand of American citizens. The company continued to make big money and status, so later on the division which dealt with all kinds of machines became a separate company and was named "Bell-O-Matic Corporation."

Mills Liberty Bell

Charles Fey, the creator of the first ever slot machine named Liberty Bell, decided to join such huge manufacturer giant to produce something new,  much better and innovative. He became a part of the Mills Novelty in 1907. This very year marks the creation of Mills Liberty Bell. It looked almost like the classic Liberty Bell: it featured a cast iron case in the front, the playing cards – King, Queen and Jack, and of course, the Bell.

Interesting Fact: Mills Novelty was destroyed heavily after the earthquake. Charles Fey couldn’t survive such damage to his life-time business, faded into relative obscurity and died a couple of years later. Nevertheless Mills Company was restored and continued to grow and thrive.
